The Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently changed it’s drinking water standards related to lead and copper (Lead and Copper Rule Revision). These changes are meant to further protect our public health by reducing exposure to lead in drinking water. The drinking water provided by the City of Caledonia does NOT contain lead. However, lead can enter drinking water from corrosion of plumbing materials that contain lead.

These materials include lead service lines, lead based materials used to join copper pipe, and brass components made before 1986. Galvanized lines, while not composed of lead, are porous and can accumulate lead deposits and then release them into the water. The goal of the lead and copper rule revision is to identify and replace all lead and galvanized lines.

As part of the new federal requirements, the City of Caledonia will be inventorying all water service line materials connected to the public water distribution system and will be generating a survey to identify specific piping. Please watch for a paper copy of the survey included in utility billing or the survey can be found online at www.caledoniamn.gov Click on Government and then on Public Works and scroll down to survey link.

Please complete the survey online or return the paper copy to Public Works at City Hall. If you are unable to complete the survey online or unsure of what material your water line is, you can call city staff to schedule an appointment for the city to assist. A site visit should not take more than 15 minutes and will be of no cost to you.
